Ghana and Canada on Monday,2nd August jointly observed United Nations ban on cluster munitions with the beating of heavy African "fontomfrom" drums to signify the triumphant coming into force of the law on Sunday, August 1.

From Sunday, 1 August 2010, The Convention on Cluster Munitions takes effect and becomes a binding international law in countries around the world.

UN Urged to Act Now Against Deadly Trade In Weapons

The UN has been urged to take action to end the irresponsible trade in conventional weapons, as discussions on the Arms Trade Treaty began in New York. IANSA (The International Action Network on Small Arms) director Rebecca Peters welcomed the opening of the discussion process, but stressed that delegates must work hard to make the proposed treaty bullet-proof.
